The School Lunch Assistance Program

This conference year, the Edna B. Dykes Missionary Society of St. James AMEC (Frederick) took on a new outreach project - The School Lunch Assistance Program. During the school year when students who receive reduced lunch get a negative balance on their account, they receive lunch, but it is a different lunch than the rest of the students. This can be embarrassing for the students, and we don’t want our students to be stigmatized. We decided to raise funds to offset accounts with a negative balance.

Our Young Adult Missionaries (YAMs) Jessica Smith and Mi’Kea Hawkins, who are both educators, were excited about leading this endeavor. It was through energy, excitement and their efforts along with the support of the missionaries, the YPD and members of St. James that $600 was raised. In February, checks in the amount of $200 each were presented to three schools within Frederick City - Hillcrest Elementary, Lincoln Elementary and West Frederick Middle School. This is a project we plan to continue in the future. To God be the glory for the great things He continues to do!
