A Call to Action Against Gun Violence

By Sis. Jacqui Bennett, Commission Chair, Second Episcopal District Women’s Missionary Society (WMS)

Moms Demand Action (MDA), Global Gun Violence Prevention Commission

From June 6-8, 2025, communities across the nation united for 2025 Wear Orange Prevention Weekend, a movement dedicated to honoring survivors and victims of gun violence while advocating for a safer future. This initiative, rooted in faith and justice, aligns with the mission of the Second Episcopal District (SED) WMS Moms Demand Action (MDA) Commission to promote peace, healing, and proactive change. Why Orange? The Wear Orange movement began in memory of Hadiya Pendleton, a 15-year-old girl who was tragically shot in Chicago in 2013.

Her friends chose to wear orange—the color hunters wear to protect themselves and others—to symbolize their commitment to ending gun violence. Since then, Wear Orange has grown into a national movement, marking National Gun Violence Awareness Day on the first Friday of June each year. Faith in Action ~ Gun violence is a pressing issue that affects families, neighborhoods, and places of worship. As followers of Christ, we are called to stand against injustice and promote safety and healing.

Wear Orange Prevention Weekend is an opportunity to reaffirm our commitment to peace, justice, and the sanctity of life. As missionaries and faith leaders, we are called to be peacemakers. This year, here are a few ways we engaged in 2025 Wear Orange Prevention Weekend events. (Photos are attached) Wear Orange: Showed solidarity by wearing orange clothing and accessories. Hosted Community Events: Held educational Webinar, and discussions on gun violence prevention.

Amplify Awareness: Shared messages of hope and advocacy through social media, newsletters, and church bulletins. Support Survivors: Connected with the local organizations working to assist victims and families affected by gun violence. Let us continue to come together in faith, wear orange, and work toward a future free from violence to be a voice for change. If you’re interested in or consider volunteering or learning more ways to support please contact the SED WMS MDA Washington Conference Coordinator, Sister Donna Lacy at (703-586-7832). Our SED WMS MDA Team is forever thankful and grateful. To God Be All The Glory!!
